Internet Influence on Politics 2008

Posted by: Allan Woodstrom on: May 21, 2008

I am a gen-y internet junkie. I would also classify myself as someone who is fascinated by political communication and worried about the future of our planet and the United States.

While I am busy, trying to manage a job with greater responsibilities, a social life, recreational athletic leagues and side jobs – the Internet is my savior for following politics.

Of my friends, I know I am not the only one who has used the internet to keep up on politic bantar, so with that I thought I would pull together some information about how the Internet has influenced politics.

  • Current – Will-i-am’s Barack Obama “Yes We Can” video was viewed 15 million times on MySpace.com, alone. (Viral Video Chart)
  • Current – 46 of the most popular political viral videos in 2008 have over 100,000 views. (Viral Video Chart)
  • April 2008 – Democratic presidential candidate Hilary Clinton claimed to have raised $100,000 in 20 minutes through internet marketing. (The Atlantic)
  • February 2008 – Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama raised $55 million dollars on the Internet. (LA Times)

Those are just a few small ways that the Internet has influenced politics in 2008. If anyone has any other examples of how the Internet has influenced politics in 2008, please post a comment.
