Earlier this week, I wrote about Stephen Colbert’s views on women, senior citizens and homosexuals. If you read it, you can tell I have very little respect for his views on these subjects.

Adding fuel to my fire was a Facebook group supporting Colbert. That group gained over 1 million members in less than five days – making it the fastest growing group in Facebook history.

It made me wonder if members of this group joined it because their friends did, or do they actually agree with Colbert’s views?

As an example of how hard it would be to actually agree with Colbert, let me remind you what he said about women in his new book, “Scientists have proven, one assumes, that every flaw in a child can be traced back to a mistake made by the mother. As adults we’re all imperfect, so that means all mothers are incompetent. But some mothers are worse than others. Take women who work. If you work outside the home, you might as well bring coconut arsenic squares to the school bake sale.”

Do the women of this group really want to fall back into suppression? Isn’t it a bit ironic that a large percentage of the members in his group are actually female college students?

What we are really seeing here is a manifestation of the super powers held by social influences. Social networks like Facebook enable this type of influence at a level we’ve never seen before.

If you are apart of this group, or any other political group, I hope you know what you are signing up for.  I believe that a vast majority of the over one million Facebook users who joined his group have no idea the issues they are supporting. These will be the same people who will vote down a party line in 2008 and have no idea what they are supporting. 

I hope Colbert’s intentions were to raise awareness about how poorly educated most Americans are about politics. I think Facebook proved his point.
