Colbert made an appearance on NBC’s Meet the Press with Tim Russert this Sunday. It really opened my eyes to the seriousness and ridiculousness of his book and presidential campaign.
Is he trying to sell books? Is he trying to prove a point? What the hell is he doing?
I don’t understand why so many media outlets are taking him seriously. It could his backing from Viacom, but it doesn’t make much sense either why they would support him. I wonder if they are allowing him to post videos on YouTube, like all of the other presidential candidates?
In my humble estimation, he choose to run for president in order to achieve a higher profile media book tour. Colbert it seems has taken an Ann Coulter-like approach to selling his books. This is where I start to have a serious issue with his messaging. People are supposed to think he is funny.
Below are some excerpts from Colbert’s book, which when pressed about them on Meet the Press, he couldn’t say anything constructive. He only made more jokes.
About Senior Citizens:
“Sorry, but retirement offends me. You don’t just stop fighting in the middle of a war because your legs hurt. So why do you get to stop working in the middle of your life just because your prostate hurts?”
About Mothers:
“Scientists have proven, one assumes, that every flaw in a child can be traced back to a mistake made by the mother. As adults we’re all imperfect, so that means all mothers are incompetent. But some mothers are worse than others. Take women who work. If you work outside the home, you might as well bring coconut arsenic squares to the school bake sale.”
About Gay Marriage:
“[Gay marriage is] the biggest threat facing America today—next to socialized medicine, the Dyson vacuum cleaner and the recumbent bicycle.” During his interview with Russert, Colbert went on to say, “Marriage is the basic building block of society. And if gay men get married, that threatens my marriage immediately because I only got married as a taunt toward gay men because they couldn’t.”
He may think it’s funny to make a mockery of our society, but I don’t hear a lot of mothers, senior citizens, or gay people laughing. Quite frankly, I don’t think anyone else should be either.
[...] week, I wrote about Stephen Colbert’s views on women, senior citizens and homosexuals. If you read it, you can tell I have very little respect for his views, motives and [...]
Just curious, do you watch Colbert’s show?
I don’t like Colbert at ALL… but I do like the fact that he is making all politicians look bad. The thing I don’t like is he is also representing the US. Then again our society is so messed up anyway… why not?
He’s making a mockery of the ignorant portion of America that actually has beliefs as skewed as these. He’s a really funny guy. The fact that you can’t see through him to his humor shows that maybe you’re ignorant yourself. I’m not a senior citizen, mother, or homosexual, but if I was, I can guarantee you that I absolutely would be laughing. And about his presidential campaign, he even admits that he is only doing it to hear his name be announced with the other presidential candidates. You make it seem as though he’s pretending to have further goals. Do your research before you criticize, and above all, lighten up.
I don’t know what grudge you have against him but seriously dude LIGHTEN UP. Don’t you think we have far too many problems in this world rather than worrying about the views of a comedienne which are might I remind you, are only just for that HUMOR. Next time, write an article not driven by your personal judgement and feelings. Your credibility as a writer only fails with these baseless attacks
